I had a really funny request for some GD music, which is the context for this. A foreign student who arrived in the US only recently and knows I download a lot of music asked me to make some copies for him. It's not like he's heard the GD or anything; he just wants to learn "American music."

So I ask: "What music do you like?" Him: "Oh, I listen to everything!" Me: "Like, what in particular?" Him: "Oh, back home I had four tapes. Metallica, Guns n Roses, the Band and Jurassic Park!"

Yeah, that hot band Jurassic Park. Apparently he got the tapes from some traveling Spaniard. (Really.)

Me: "That's an interesting mix. Do you like the Beatles?" Him: "Who?"

But he wants to learn "American music," and hence has asked for some. Well, I'm always up for potentially saving someone from falling into the rap trap. I don't have the time to make a whole individualized mix, so I said if he wanted whole shows, no problem. I burned some early 80s shows cuz that's high energy and, I think, more accessable to non-Deadheads (or those unlikely to be truly converted) than the earlier shows.

But I figured he might as well have Cornell, too, just so that, if he runs into any Deadheads, he'll be officially hip. When I tried to burn it, though, only St. Stephen would burn! So weird ....

How in the hey would that happen? Any techno-savvy folks here have a clue?

And if anyone has thoughts about what Dead shows would be good for, as it were, Intercultural Communication and American Culture 101, share away :-)

for the glitch . . . what is your process / tool(s) for burning? I've had that kind of selective glitch happen to me twice with Toast8, both times it was because of the source files downloaded. I re-downloaded those files, put them in my toaster and all was fine.

When I burned through Itunes in the past, I often got different levels on different tracks - even if they all came from the same, even leveled source. Anyone out there got a clue/answer about this?

to Duckpond - that's just another annoying thing about iTunes. It seems to try to equalize all the tracks all on its own, but heaven knows to what standard level. Apple wants to do us a favor, but I think makes it worse. I'm not a fan of the synch behavior for podcasts either, since I have two machines and multiple users. It causes grief when drag and drop would suffice. You could inspect some of the "faulty" tracks - do a Command "I" on the track in iTunes, go to Options and see if the volume or EQ has been adjusted. Toast has been my standard for burning, usually rock solid.

hey UncleJohn52, I walked away from the Itunes 'system' a few years back and do all of my burning with Toast as well - apart fro those two download incidents, it's done the job nicely.

Any of the spring and summer 1970s shows (like the recent Road Trips 3.3) are likely to contain a great selection of traditional rock-n-roll, blues, and country (Silver Threads) that might introduce him to "American" music. Then you have the WD/AB tunes, and maybe the harder psychedelic stuff will seem somewhat familiar from his Metallica knowledge.

With one of those shows as his introduction, he could trace its heritage back to Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Woody Guthrie, B B King, and Merle Haggard. The "American Book of the Dead" draws lots of these connections, if you have a copy to lend him.

Trace the heritage? Dude (or dudette), this is a guy who never heard of the Beatles. He thinks Jurassic Park is a band. He's got a long way to go before he's tracing any heritage to blues singers :-) That's partly why this is so funny to me ... I just have no baseline to go on in terms of his taste (if any)!

I don't think it's a lack of desire to learn, but I think the context he could bring to it is just so basic -- no knowledge of Elvis, Beatles, Stones, etc -- that to get to that place on the learning curve where you're looking at older blues is just such a steep climb that it's hard to envision. Maybe someday, but not any time soon.

Dude and dudette goes back to at least the early 80s! You must be up there with Tuli Kupferberg, then :-)

Not quite that old, though I do remember the Fugs (never saw them but always admired their in your face iconoclasm).

Born in '52, heard Live Dead when it came out and didn't like it, but got on the bus with WD early in 1970. Everything after the hiatus is "late" Dead, in my mind.

The band is important to me primarily because of its role in the utopian vision of psychedelic transcendence, 1966-1973. In my heart of hearts I feel the hippies were right, and that the world has never recovered from Richard Nixon.

But then maybe I'm just another old fart clinging to a nostalgic view of his youth.

Gosh, just think of the musical vistas you could open up for someone who's never heard American music! Throw in some Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, John Prine, some Motown, Miles Davis, Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughan... anything blues or jazz, just omit the disco and rap shit. I would be handing this guy stacks of CDs...

I'm more of a Mac guy, but work with both platforms... and know WinXP better than Vista... but I've always found Windows Media Player to be a bugger. I think it has problems managing a variety of file types, i.e. .mp3 and .mv4 etc. If you have another program for burning CD's, like Nero, try that instead of the Windows product.

and congrats on a very interesting venture, you must be a really hardy soul.

I once burned the Eyes->Big River, Playin', The Race Is On and the China Cat->Rider from Des Moines 6-16-74 for a guitar player in Ghana. He went nuts. He played that disc 4 times that day and night and invited some friends over. He "had no idea about this kind of music".

I really don't know about the CD offhand, although if you gave some more specifics I might be able to help.

For what it's worth, if someone had handed me Cornell as my first introduction to the dead I would have hated it. Now I think that concert is quite good, but it never would have grabbed me without any context.

I would suggest a selection from DP8. Here's my ideal track listing for a single CD:

1. St. Stephen >
2. Cryptical >
3. Drums >
4. Other One >
5. Cryptical >
6. Cosmic Charlie
7. Good Lovin'
8. Dancing in the Street

I think Garcia's guitar playing on Other One, Good Lovin and Dancing is the best, most fluid playing he's ever done (by "best" i mean better than EVERYTHING else, ever ever ever). But use your own instincts.

Add a few select tracks from the acoustic set and you have a winner here for sure. Cold Jordan, I Know You Rider, Cumberland, Uncle John's would be my picks. It was this show, with the full acoustic set and the beginning of the electric set, on a 90 min cassette, that got me interested in the Dead way back when.

If there were more room on a CD I would certainly have put some acoustic on there... probably could fit a couple, but the whole set is so stellar I would feel bad including some and not the rest.

You may be right about Cornell, which is why I wasn't initially thinking of it. Actually I figured I'd burn it and listen to it again, then if it didn't seem to work, I'd just keep it on CD. I just had to do some long errands and was in the car a while, so was listening to it again, though, and the beginning is pretty high energy ... hard to judge, really, how others would react. The '70s in general has a sweet sound, but also has a raw aspect that I'm not sure would appeal to all ears.

I like your "intro list," and that's the thing that would do it for me (and basically did, given what I first heard), but he has literally never heard any 60s psychedelia (never heard the Beatles, even) and isn't a musician, so it just might not be accessible. I'd listened to a lot of things in that general vein first (albeit, of course, not as good!) and I'm betting you did too. But what's interesting is there's just no contextual baseline here. Which is why I'm thinking high energy, with lots of cowboy Dead and stuff that rocks. But who knows ...

Veneta maybe? Again, I have my biases, but I wouldn't touch anything from after 1974 for the first year of my deadheadedness. Veneta is a solid, classic show (although I think it's trumped by the September shows) and has a huge number of peaks, as well as some great renditions of the "cowboy tunes." 1972 seems to me to be a really good entry point; they were extremely tight at that point and had a pretty reasonably sized repertoire, and it also exemplifies a peak point in the psychedelia aspect to the music (playin and dark star from this show are many people's favorites).

Also a big problem on the "Ladies & Gentlemen" discs (Fillmore April 1971) - great energy, lots of strings need tuning. No wonder in latter years they spent more time between songs retuning. But, it features one of my favorite GDRFB.

Good idea, but I don't have that one myself, cuz I haven't found it in downloadable form ... Am I missing a link here?

But yes, '72 is a good idea. Tight, with both cowboy tunes and Dark Stars, etc. Guess there's a reason Europe '72 was one of the first albums I listened to constantly. (Back when I first heard the music, I loved the first album, Anthem, Aoxomoxoa and Europe '72. Honestly, I don't think the others would have "converted" me. But I also saw a series of shows almost immediately, so it's hard to know what it would mean just to have heard the recorded music.)

I know this is really stupid, but I've never actually tried burning DPs onto CD. I have some on CD and some on iTunes, and I've thought of putting my iTunes ones onto CDs, but haven't figured it out yet. (OK, I haven't tried, but it's not instantaneously apparent in a nanosecond, even though there's probably a button for it or something.) This reminds me that I actually should save the iTunes ones in case my computer goes kablooey. Although they're probably safe in iTunes Universe somewhere.

Create a playlist for what you want to burn. Drag and drop the show, album, or individual tracks into the playlist. At the bottom of the playlist there will be a button to burn a CD. iTunes will check the playlist automatically to see what can fit on a single disc. If you don't like where a disc is going to end (such as in the middle of a China/Rider) you can un-check the last song or songs to make a nice, tidy disc. Once your disc is burned, un-check those songs and repeat the process for the next disc.

In seventh grade, my son had to make a CD of twentieth-century music. I remember we had a lot of fun with it. Blues and ragtime and swing and be-bop and reggae and hip-hop and the Beatles and Dylan and, um, the Grateful Dead. (Though I'm sorry to say, if I recall correctly, his Dead pick was Touch of Gray.)

I'll see if he still has it and tell you what he included. It would make a good curriculum for a new arrival from another planet who needed a few points of reference for all the sounds suddenly surrounding him. It must simply sound cacophonous at first.

I once tutored a deaf woman who heard the birds sing for the first time after she got a cochlear implant at age 45. Wonder if I could still turn her on to the Dead ... I'd be afraid it would make her brain explode.

Check out ebay or craig's list for the 'boom tube' sold under the virgin name (sony may have done a clone as well). Great, rich sound that packs tightly, doesn't take up much room when traveling and even has a silly little - but still effective - sub-woofer. Good luck finding one , if you're interested . . . and safe and inspired travels to you.

I haven't seen Seldom Scene (uh, need Rob to give me breakdown on how that parses) but everything I've heard on Sirius-XM Radio sounds really good.

I had the great fortune to see Crooked Still 3 times at FloydFest two years ago and if you'll indulge me, there's a pretty cool story.......

FloydFest has a workshop series each year - Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Railroad Earth, Gokh Bi (drum troop). Anyway, in 2008, David Grisman was scheduled to do a mandolin workshop starting at 10:00 AM Saturday morning. I was in my seat in the fourth row at 9:30. 10:00 AM rolls up and there are about 3000 people crowded around the stage. One of the Floydian announcers came out and announced that there was a schedule change - the Grisman workshop was going to move to 11:00 AM and he asked that we stick around for Crooked Still. The vast majority stayed and the crowd was estimated at about 2700 - Aoife O'Donovan sticks her head out and went goggle-eyed at the size of the crowd. Crooked Still came out and blew the place away. About halfway through their set, Grisman pokes his head out and one by one all of the Quintet came to side stage to watch. It looked like he was really impressed and he really talked them up when the Grisman Quintet came out and did their workshop. It ended up being a Quintet set more than a mandolin workshop but none of us were disappointed. He did a Q&A period - someone asked him to tell some stories about what it was like playing with jerry in old and In the Way. Grisman looks out in the crowd and says "Well there's a lot of kids here........one time we drove up to Sausilito and played a gig. We met some really nice folks and after the show we went to their house. We, ummm, had a good time, and then we drove back to San Francisco." The crowd roared.

Anyway, back to Crooked Still. They played two more sets at Floyd and had a big crowd at each one. I ran into Tristan (cello), Brittany Haas (fiddle) and Aoife during New Monsoon's Saturday night set and had a short conversation about how much I enjoyed their impromptu set before Grisman. Aoife told me that Grisman asked them afterwards if they would consider joining his tour and open for him the rest of the summer. Apparently he was impressed too! I haven't seen them since then, but really enjoyed what I saw and won't miss them if they ever get close to Virginia Beach.

good story - glad you got to see Crooked Still (Tristan was relatively knew then - after Rushad spontaneously combusted one to many times) - I love that band. As for the Seldom Scene, the current band - though good - is far removed from the original line up which featured Mike Auldridge, John Starling, etc.. If you haven't heard 'Live at the Cellar Door', do yourself a favor and check it out - esp. their version of 'I Know You Rider' - a long standing 'desert isle disc' for me.
